When the mains power fails, returns, brown-outs occur you risk frying that expensive CPU/GPU you've purchased.

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply), is an device that provides power to the PC when the mains power fails.

They contain a battery or batteries and an inverter that run for a short time (5-20 minutes depending on the UPS and the load).

It is sufficient to properly shut down the PC, and in some cases allow you to keep gaming if the power is restored soon enough.

They also provide surge protection and some also have a provision for surge protection on the phone/dsl line.

Sizing can be tricky as they are specified in VA, luckily here is a calculator to give you an idea;

Its a good idea to oversize though, better reliability and longer run-time on batteries, I only need a 600VA but run a Defender 1200VA unit with 2 x 12Volt/7VA batteries, which allows for 20-30 minutes browsing and about 5-10 minutes gaming, usually the power comes back on before I need to shut down. The UPS will beep when the batteries are low.

here is an guide for brands/costs;
