Ok iv got the NBN plan is 25mbs download and 5 upload with Telstra,

hers my query why then when I download a game either from steam or origin that it only downloads at around 2 to 2.5 MBS , I'm a bit baffled.

I used to be on ADSL2 and its speed was 10mbs/2
and that use to download around 1,5 MBS

is this normal or is there a plot at foot

PS i did the ookla speed test and it showed 25MBS and 5 MBS upload

You must be really close to the node to get those speeds. Most I have ever seen is 22mbps.

I usually see 17mbps for speedtest which is still fast but could be better if the had done the NBN FTTH instead of FTHN. Canberra losers!! Orange_Colorz_PDT_46

It might be that what you are trying to download is whet everyone want to download? Flood through a hosepipe?

Ok, I just did a test here in K'town and I got DL 29.83Mbps and UL 4.93Mbps.

I'm on a 4g dongle so that doesn't seem possible. Something wrong here.

There are 3 speed tiers for the nbn, 25, 50, 100 mbs

If you went with the 25, which depending on a few factors ie. distance from node etc. The speed you are getting sounds about right.

If you're getting 22mbs, that's 2.75 MB/s , but depending on where you are downloading from, traffic on your isp, crap wiring etc. you'll never see the max 2.75, so 2 - 2.5ish sounds about right.

If you were to get the 100mbs plan you'd likely see speeds of 12ish MB/s +

I'd go with the 100mbs if possible, I get a consistent 17mbs on my adsl2 which gives me around 1.9-2 MB/s down, so it really ain't much better than that on the 25mbs plan.

The government really fked this upgrade up by not doing FTTH nationwide.

There is a difference between Mb/s and MB/s

Its like saying its 1450 metres to the shop, but its also 1.45 kilometres to the shop.
ookla shows Mb/s (by default), steam and origin show MB/s.

megabit per second (symbol Mbit/s or Mb/s, often abbreviated "Mbps")
is a unit of data transfer rate equal to:
1,000,000 bits per second
1,000 kilobits per second
125,000 bytes per second
125 kilobytes per second

megabyte per second (MB/s) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to:
8,000,000 bits per second
1,000,000 bytes per second
1,000 kilobytes per second
8 megabits per second

from wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units#Megabit_per_second

Orange_Colorz_PDT_04

Yeah I explained the difference in megabits vs megabytes in my initial post but edited it out.

Bottom line, if you want the highest speed you'll have to pay a little more and get a 100mbps plan.

The 25mbps plan would be around the same as having adsl2 anyway. They really should explain things better to people before selling their bs plans.
